Holding Absence ‘Like A Shadow’ - Turned Up Louder
Following their announcement of two guitarists, Scott Carey and Chris Smitherman, officially joining the band, Welsh post hardcore band Holding Absence have just released a single, ‘Like A Shadow’. They teased fans by captioning pictures on their social media with lyrics from the song, then it premiered on Daniel P Carter’s BBC Radio 1 Rock Show on Sunday (18th November) before its release on streaming services.
It was difficult to tell where Holding Absence were going next as the six songs already in their back catalogue are enjoyable within themselves, but their slow anthemic style wouldn’t necessarily flow together on a full-length album. Though this is currently a standalone single, it gives us an insight as to how their signature sound will be translated into album tracks.
Maintaining the same level of emotional intensity, ‘Like A Shadow’ has a more upbeat energy, which is sure to go down well live as they support As It Is on their UK/EU tour this month. It should also be easier for fans to sing along to, with its short catchy chorus, memorable lyrics and no crazily long high notes from vocalist Lucas Woodland. His unique style, though, which mixes his unmistakable soaring clean singing with harsh, almost screaming, high notes, is here to stay. It dominates the pre-chorus and the first half of the chorus before giving way to explosive instrumentation accompanied by echoes of the last word ‘longer’.
The band have now released a music video, all in black and white, of course. The themes in the video are reminiscent of My Chemical Romance’s ‘Helena’ video, and they compliment the lyrics which revolve around a dying romance.
