LOUDER FEATURES: Mixtape Medley with Jack and Sally
Welcome back to Mixtape Medley, the feature where we take you inside the record collections and CD shelves of your favourite up-and-coming bands and artists! In this edition, we spoke to London-based pop-rock trio, Jack and Sally! Comprised of Ben Felix on vocals and bass, Joshua Jacobs on guitar and Pravir Ramasundaram on drums, the band took us back through some of the sounds of their early years, through to the tracks they can't stop spinning to this day.
All the songs featured below have been compiled into this handy playlist - listen along here:
Which songs remind you most of your childhood?
Pravir - ‘Friday’ by Goldspot
Ben - Definitely ‘I’m With You’ by Avril Lavigne. It’s from the first audio cassette I bought back when I was 13 I think.
Josh - Too many here! I’ll vote 'Somewhere I Belong' by Linkin Park, my first foray into non-mainstream music back when I was 12.
Who was the first band you saw live? Which song/s remind you most of that show?
Pravir - Gosh, that is a tough one to remember. I think it was a local band from Chennai, India where I grew up. I used to play in a band called Gorillas In Groove when I was starting out in the independent scene in Chennai and we had this song called “Suspension of Disbelief”. That’s probably one song that reminds me of the one of the first live gigs I have ever been to.
Ben - Euphoria - They’re an Indian band, their lead vocalist is Palash Sen - that man is an absolute legend and his vocals are truly unbelievable. They have a song called ‘Maeri’ which sits in my playlist to this day.
Josh - The one and only, My Chemical Romance. The Black Parade stadium tour. Life changing. Cliched but yeah - 'Welcome To The Black Parade' definitely reminds me most of that show, it was my first time seeing any band live and MCR killed it the entire show.
What is the perfect song to send to a friend you haven’t seen in a while to let them know you’re thinking of them?
Pravir - ‘Burden In My Hand’ by Soundgarden
Ben - Hmmm… probably ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ by Oasis
Josh - “The Friendship Song” - Laura Jane Grace
What song do you love but would never admit to liking in front of most people?
Pravir - ‘Pretty Please’ by Dua Lipa.
Ben - ‘Love Yourself’ by Justin Bieber ;)
Josh - Hmm, maybe 'Love Story', Taylor Swift? I dont have any problem admitting this though, it’s a banger!
If you could have any artist feature on one of your songs, and if you could feature on a re-recorded version of one of their songs, who would you want to work with?
Pravir - I think it would be Chris Cornell. Simply because he isn’t around anymore and it would be the greatest thing to have his voice on one of our songs.
Ben - It has to be Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day. I owe so much of who I am as a musician to him.
Josh - Hayley Williams, no question. Supreme vocalist, and I’ve been a fan for years.
If you had to get one line from any song tattooed on your body, which would it be and where would you get it done?
Pravir - “Blow up the outside world” from 'Blow Up The Outside' by Soundgarden. I would get it on my chest, at the base of my neck.
Ben - “I’m the son of rage and love” from 'Jesus of Suburbia' by Green Day. I’m actually the son of rage and love if you knew my parents. I’d get it on my right arm.
Josh - “Heart means everything” from “Colder Than My Heart, If You Can Imagine” by A Day to Remember. Right forearm.
Do you have a favourite ballad from a band who usually write much heavier tracks?
Pravir - 'Shine' by Slash’s Snakepit. They are usually so fast and heavy but their range and melodic prowess really shows in the song.
Ben - Maybe ‘November Rain’ by Guns ‘n Roses. You could also class it as a heavy song but the piano work in that song is beautiful.
Josh - Loads of choices here again, but I’d go with 'If It Means A Lot To You', another A Day to Remember track.
What is your go-to song for walking alone late at night?
Pravir - 'Drive' by Incubus.
Ben - ‘The A-Team’ by Ed Sheeran, such a beautiful song.
Josh - Depends on the mood...don’t think i have a specific go-to song for this, it’ll be whatever I’m generally feeling at the time.
If you had to cover one song that is far outside your usual genre, what would it be and why?
Pravir - 'Won’t Go Home Without You' by Maroon 5. I think this song has some great potential to be turned into a MCR type of sad-but-heavy banger!
Ben - ‘Flying Without Wings’ by Westlife. The lyrics on that song are inspirational.
Josh - 'What Do You Mean', Justin Bieber. Definitely pop-goes-punk banger potential.
Which song are you the proudest of writing?
Pravir - “Superstar” which is the opening track on Jack and Sally’s debut EP “Who We Become”, which came out last year.
Ben - This one’s difficult. ‘Love and a Riot’ and one of our upcoming songs - ‘Jerusalem’ - would be up against each other. ‘Love and a Riot’ tries to portray issues related to divorce and the impact it has on families, whereas ‘Jerusalem’ is the only song I have ever written that is about religion, and it also speaks about my love for Christianity, while at the same time, tries to highlight my disenchantment with my religion and faith. I’d say 'Jerusalem' simply because of the depth of the lyrics.
Josh - I’d go with “Tomorrow’s Revolution” or “Love and a Riot”. Still some of the best guitar parts I’ve written.
Jack and Sally's latest single, 'Love and Riot', is out now via Engineer Records- stream the track here:
