LOUDER FEATURES: Mixtape Medley with Pollyanna

Welcome back to Mixtape Medley, where we take you inside the vinyl boxes and CD shelves of your favourite up-and-coming artists! This edition sees us chat to budding pop rockers Pollyanna. Hailing from New Jersey, their new single “Don’t Stay, Don’t Go” is a feverish, sherbety delight - but what tracks inspired them to create their own sound? Find out below:

All the songs mentioned below have been compiled into this handy playlist - listen along here:

Which songs do you remember hearing growing up?

Jill: When I was growing up I would hear bands like Paramore, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lady Gaga, and I really loved Katy Perry when I was like 9.

Brandon: I remember being a kid, maybe 4-5, and seeing 'Dookie' by Green Day at my cousins house. On the back cover is a live shot from one of their shows and someone in the crowd has an Ernie doll, like Bert and Ernie. So I always asked to listen to the Ernie CD with the cartoon cover. Sesame Street actually sued Green Day’s record company to get them to remove Ernie from new copies (fun fact)!

Dan: Lots of early 2000’s pop, some late 60’s-mid 80’s Rock and Roll, and definitely some early pop punk.

Are there a bands from your local area that you always associate with home?

There’s not one specific band in our area that reminds us of home but some of our favorite bands we met from New Jersey are: Skyeline; Ogbert The Nerd; Wyndup Kid; The Vaughns; and America Part Two. Brandon lives in North Jersey so bands like Skylar Pocket, Tula Vera, and Junkanoo for him!

What is the best song to listen to on a cold winter evening?

Jill: When it’s cold and night time, I love listening to Jorja Smith.

Brandon: 'Perdida' by Biig Piig

Dan: Nat King Cole's 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire'

You get to have dinner with one musician, alive or dead – who is it?

Jill: Probably Carrie Brownstein from Sleater Kinney or Hayley Williams from Paramore.

Brandon: Kurt Cobain bb!

Dan: Jimmy Sullivan

Which song never fails to get you all singing when driving to shows?

Some of our favourite songs we sing along to or dance to in the van on tour is 'Tokyo Drift' and 'Since U Been Gone' by Kelly Clarkson, also 'This is it Chief' by Lil Tracy - shout out P.T. Jones!

Which song inspires you to get writing your own material?

Jill: No song in particular inspires me but when I listen to 90’s alternative music I get a huge itch to write more!

Brandon: 90’s alternative music as well!

Dan: All music inspires me.

If you could feature on any famous track, which would it be?

Jill: I’d love to feature on a PVRIS track or any Snail Mail song.

Brandon: The White Stripes

Dan: Still waiting on that Lil Uzi feature . . .

If you had to choose one song to be the soundtrack to a movie about your life, what would it be?

Jill: 'Definitely The One' by Jorja Smith. Or 'Something Has To Change' by The Japanese House.

Brandon: 'King of the World' by Weezer

Dan: 'Damned' by Kevin Sherwood

Which is the song you are most proud of writing?

Jill: Personally I’m most proud of writing the song 'IDKY' that is on our newest EP 'Sugar Coat'.

Brandon: We haven’t released it yet... 👀

Dan: All of them!
